Gum Therapy
Gum disease is an infection that causes bleeding gums, bad breath , loose teeth and is the leading cause of adult tooth loss . The American Association of Periodontology states that approx. 85% of Americans suffer from some form of the disease.
The four traditional ways to treat gums is with deep cleaning under the gums, gum surgery, bone grafts and antibiotics. Now there is Ultrasonic and Laser cleaning. At Premier Smiles Dentistry we use ultrasonic deep cleaning, antibiotics and laser. We try our best to treat your condition non-surgically.
Gum disease is caused by a bacterial biofilm (plaque) that forms constantly on your teeth and if not removed regularly by brushing and flossing, will lead to the first stage of the disease called Gingivitis. This is the only stage of the disease that can be cured by good oral home care and seeing the dentist for a professional cleaning. If the disease is allowed to progress its called Periodontitis and is evidenced by a loss of bone around the teeth.
Early gum disease is treated with a procedure called Scaling and Root Planing. Thin instruments are used by the hygenist to gently remove the plaque and tartar(hardened plaque) under the gum line. Root planning is the smoothing of tooth roots to make it more difficult for plaque to adhere to them in the future. For you comfort during this procedure we offer local anesthesia or no shot alternatives called Cetacaine or Oraquix.
At Premier Smiles Dentistry, we also use advanced Laser therapy to treat gum disease. The laser removed bacteria from under the gums and encourages natural healing.
Benefits of laser therapy include :
- Removal of bacteria instantly
- No tissue cutting
- Little or no bleeding
- No need for stitches
- Little chance of infection
- Tooth roots not exposed so no sensitivity
- Healthy gum tissue is preserved
The Laser process is much safer and more comfortable compared to the gum surgery methods and is comparable in price.
