Senior Dental Care

Dentistry for seniors has never been easier.

Going to the dentist is never a favorite thing for most people. This is in large part due to the memories of painful dental visits in the past. Fortunately, things have gotten better. A dental appointment has become more enjoyable,  thanks in part to advancements in dental technology and materials. Here’s some of the more important ones that will make for easier appointments:

Ultrasonic Cleaners can clean teeth with sound waves and water. No need for the scraping of teeth with sharp metal instruments. And no pain or bleeding.

The tooth polishing paste even tastes better with flavors like bubblegum, cherry, mint available.

Digital X-Rays can help patients see what the dentist is talking about. They are 90% less radiation than traditional x-rays and the images are immediately projected onto the monitor in front of patients ..Furthemore, the images can be magnified to show where the problem is. And it takes less time to take them.

Intraoral Cameras are little digital wand shaped cameras that can take photos inside patients mouth and show the condition of the gums or fillings. Now the dentist can just show you whats wrong .

Laser cavity detectors are used by dentists to shine a harmless laser onto teeth to detect cavities that aren’t  visible to the eye yet. No more poking the tooth with a sharp instrument to see if there is  a cavity. And cavities are caught early when they can be removed in most cases without anesthesia.

Teeth whitening gels are more effective too. And dentists have a way to de- sensitize the teeth prior to the whitening process so patients can have a painfree way to bleach their teeth.

Tooth colored fillings now allow patients the opportunity to restore their teeth to their original shape and color and unlike metal fillings, they don’t cause tooth fractures.

CAD/CAM crowns are porcelain crowns that are milled in the dentist office while the patient waits, so no need for a second visit to cement the crown.

Oral cancer detection, which is more prevalent in seniors, is easier now with the advent of the Velscope. This is a fluorescent light emitting device that can detect the oral cancer in its earliest stage before its visible to the eye.

Electric toothbrushes and flossers are great for seniors with arthritis since very little manual dexterity is needed to operate them and they can clean just as well if not better than traditional brushes or floss. The Sonic Airfloss is a waterpik/flosser in one that squirts a small stream of air and water to clean between the teeth.

Dry mouth products including special chewing gum and mints help people suffering from dry mouth due to medications or cancer treatment. They promote saliva flow and reduce cavities.

High-tech synthetics can now be used to make thinner and flexible non-metal partials and dentures. These appliances are translucent and take on the color of the patients’s gums so are virtually invisible  to detect by friends and family.

Finally, our dental office offer flexible financing options such as CareCredit or in house payments to help make dentistry more affordable.
